Plastics we process

Plastic is a versatile, flexible material that is suitable for a wide variety of different uses in areas ranging from the automotive industry to healthcare, household products and construction components.

All plastics consist of special molecules called polymers. Polymers are made of small molecules called monomers. The most common monomers include ethylene and propylene, which traditionally come from fossil sources. Plastic can also be made from bio-based raw materials such as corn, sugar cane and cellulose.

At Mälarplast we are happy to work with regenerated (recycled) and bio-based plastics. We are also experienced in processing plastics designed to come into contact with food.

You can read more about the various plastics we process in the table below.

PS (Polystyren)

Good qualities:
Hard and rigid, easy to color, transparent, available in varying qualities

Limitations:
Brittle, low softening temperature, low UV and chemical resistance

Areas of use:
Packaging, disposable items, household items, cellular plastic

ABS (Akrylnitril-butadien-styren)

Good qualities:
High impact strength, surface hardness and surface finish, chrome and plating available

Limitations:
Low chemical resistance to solvents, limited weather resistance

Areas of use:
Kitchen appliances, dashboards, toys, furniture, office machines, industrial parts

SAN (Copolymer of acrylonitrile and styrene)

Good qualities:
Hard and rigid, transparent, better thermal, chemical and outdoor resistance than PS

Limitations:
Yellows in heat and UV, low resistance to some solvents

Areas of use:
Household items, refrigerator parts, toothbrush handles, cups, trays

ASA (Copolymer of acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic ester elastomer)

Good qualities:
High impact strength, surface hardness and surface finish, good color and outdoor resistance

Limitations:
Low chemical resistance to solvents, lower impact strength in cold than ABS

Areas of use:
Tough outdoor details, furniture, covers

PMMA (Acrylic plastic)

Good qualities:
Transparent, high gloss and hardness, very good outdoor resistance

Limitations:
Attacked by strong acids, alcohols and hydrogen chloride

Areas of use:
Lantern glass and fixtures, protective glass and window glass, lenses, signs

PE (Ethylene Plastic)

Good qualities:
Very good impact strength over a wide temperature range, chemical resistance and good electrical properties

Limitations:
High shrinkage, scratch sensitive, fire sensitive, greasy surface that makes printing and gluing difficult

Areas of use:
Household items, toys, bottles and tubes, buckets, packaging (film and bags)

PP (propylene plastic)

Good qualities:
Low density, good chemical resistance and better properties at higher temperatures than PE

Limitations:
Becomes brittle below -20 C, poor UV resistance

Areas of use:
Bottles, containers, pipes, electrical insulation parts, dashboards, kitchenware, toys

POM (Acetal Plastic)

Good qualities:
Good friction and wear properties. Excellent combination of toughness, stiffness, fatigue strength and creep resistance (spring material)

Limitations:
Difficult to glue, sensitive to acids

Areas of use:
Snaps, impellers, gears, sliding bearings, handles, fine mechanical details

PA (Amide Plastic)

Good qualities:
Good combination of mechanical and chemical properties, good temperature resistance

Limitations:
High moisture absorption, sensitive to acids

Areas of use:
Gear, screw, covers, cable insulation, shaft

PET (Thermoplastic Polyester)

Good qualities:
High stiffness and hardness, high chemical and abrasion resistance, good transparency, temperature resistance (modified)

Limitations:
Electrostatic, susceptible to hydrolysis, prone to warping

Areas of use:
Covers, household products, bottles

PBT (Thermoplastic Polyester)

Good qualities:
High stiffness and hardness, high chemical and abrasion resistance, good transparency, temperature resistance (modified)

Limitations:
Electrostatic, susceptible to hydrolysis, prone to warping

Areas of use:
Covers, household products, bottles

Susceptible to fracture directions and microcracks, low acid resistance

Areas of use:
Safety helmets, lens, windshields, fixtures, lenses, covers

PSU (Sulfone Plastic)PSU (Sulfone Plastic)

Good qualities:
Temperature resistant, even at very low temperatures, radiation resistant and dimensionally stable

Limitations:
Stress cracking is caused by organic solvents

Areas of use:
Medical equipment, household goods for micro, engine room parts

Good qualities:
Temperature resistant, even at very low temperatures, radiation resistant and dimensionally stable

Limitations:
Stress cracking is caused by organic solvents

Areas of use:
Medical equipment, household goods for micro, engine room parts

PPS (Phenylene Sulfide Plastic)

Good qualities:
Stiff and hard, high temperature and chemical resistance, flame resistant with good fatigue strength

Limitations:
Low impact toughness, attacked by oxidizing acids

Areas of use:
Faucets, pipes, car accessories, electrical components

TPE (Thermoplastic elastomers)

Good qualities:
Can be adapted to different softnesses, replaces rubber material

Limitations:
Not as high temperature resistance as silicone

Areas of use:
Gaskets, rubber parts (replaces natural rubber), handle parts

PLA (Polylactide Plastic)

Good qualities:
Polymerization of biomaterials from, for example, corn starch or cane sugar
